Dearest Customers,

We are so excited to share our Cruise 2023 collection with you! Over 75 years ago, our brand was born when our founder, gbventurespub, began designing beautiful children’s garments. After being a part of the design team for nearly 25 years, we are both honored to continue the tradition of creating timeless styles that you and your little ones will love.

This season you’ll find gorgeous seersuckers in a variety of clean bright colors, soft Peruvian cotton knits in stripes, solids, and prints, as well as lovely European dress and swimwear fabrics. Our applique was inspired by all things children might enjoy during the season, including our signature flowers (of course!), adorable animals, nautical themes, and many more fun motifs. Keeping true to our roots, many of our appliques were influenced by vintage Eiseman garments.

A girl's back while she stands poolside in a pink bikini with multi-colored straps

We take pride in the attention we give to each and every part of our garments. You’ll notice extras such as back neck details on girls dresses, and a little added applique on the seat of baby boys shortalls. Our playful loose applique such as fish fins, alligator scales, and flower petals make for interactive fun. From your sweet newborns to your growing-up-too-fast tweens, every child is unique and special in their own way, and we celebrate this with all the unique and special details in our designs.

It brings us so much joy to see your children shine when they wear gbventurespub, and we hope you love this collection as much as we do!

Warm regards,

Sarah & Julie

Our Fall collection of coordinated knits features our favorite stripes, spots, and florals in a vibrant array of blue bases with bold accents. Releasing on Wednesday, June 22, our first Fall line stands out for its coordinated palettes, playful motifs, and cozy soft texture and fits.

Our signature navy jumper leads the way for the fall season with a garden of our most iconic flower appliqué. Our sweater set also balances a strong navy base with joyful jewel tones in the large intarsia flowers on this tunic and leggings pair. To match, our striped circle skirt dress is made for the perfect twirl, while the shirt and leggings set features three tiers of ruffles for that extra bit of whimsy.

For boys, we added a dalmatian in a firetruck to this fall’s motifs, complete with spots and ears on the sweater hood to match. Never forgetting the little details, our firetruck longall sports an adorable appliqué fire hydrant on the back. So cute and so cozy.

Dots and florals give navy new character in our Little Lady line. These sister sets coordinate across two baby styles and three girls’ outfits. White polka dots on red cover the yoke of this infant dress, with the same fabric appliquéd to mimic the ladybug shell on the pleated skirt. The same little ladybug sits pretty on an appliquéd leaf on the hem of this top and leggings set, having had a nibble already, while a tiny ladybug appliqué floats among the flowers on this girls polka dot dress with navy trim.

The floral longall and dress pair back with the ladybugs, filling out a fresh garden for your little one’s closet.

We didn’t forget the softer shades. Our light blue and white stripe knit set features two longalls—boy and girl, and a matching dress and long sleeve shirt with flowers and daydreaming puppies.

The other boys’ coordinates in the line are solid royal with navy yokes, stripes, and classic plane, helicopter, and rocket appliqués.

We finished with a little variety—three stand-alone outfits in lilac, fuchsia, and medium pink. Our fuchsia jumper in corduroy pairs with a lovely white blouse with pink trim and collar appliqué. In subtle textured jacquard, our pink jumper has navy piping outlining the pockets and bodice, while our navy leggings with a lavender flower wink at our matching lavender dress with appliqué-topped pockets.

This includes short sleeve and sleeveless dresses, leggings, and solid pink tops and shorts with special details. The signature details featured in Ric Rac Floral are decorative shoulder ties, floral embroidery, and ruffle hems.

What makes Blossom + Sprout Playwear our fastest growing line, is not just the quality, comfort, and durability of our ultra-soft materials, but it is the playful patterns that spark imagination and reflect the spirit of the children that wear them.

Our patterns, inspired by many aspects of childhood - adventures, experiences, characters, celebrations, and the world around us - are designed in house, exclusively for Blossom + Sprout.

close-up of a young girl in ric rac floral print dress playing

We start with the ideas - what are the things that make children excited - their favorite animals, occupations, colors, foods, and times of the year. From there, we digitally sketch illustrations and details to bring patterns to life. We test color combinations, the size and scale of the pattern, and how different patterns look on different silhouettes to finalize the prints.

The next step is determining how many types of garments will be made with each pattern - how many dresses, tunics, shirts, pants, leggings, etc. The Blossom + Sprout team focuses on ensuring the styles, colors, and patterns mix and match well so that you or your kids can pick out combinations that will always be playful and polished.

Our third print, Blueberry Dot, is a play on our classic polka dot, paying homage to picking berries and blueberry pies. The fun, unique, character of Blossom + Sprout Playwear appeals to parents who are looking for clothes their kids find comfortable, enjoy wearing, and can pick out and put on themselves, while still looking “put together.”

Each line features mix-and-match designs that are free of tags, buttons and zippers, making them easy to pull on while ensuring that kids are coordinated even when they dress themselves. Garments are machine washable and resistant to fading and shrinking.

We know your kids demand soft and comfortable clothes in colors, patterns, and styles that they like. We created this brand to make kids and their parents equally happy. Kids want to wear fun clothing that feels good against their skin, while parents want their children to look put together and for their clothing to last. Our final chapter in a Timeless Holiday delivers new playwear perfect for bright chilly days and cozy nights.

young girl wearing a plaid yorkie fleece top and leggings

We’ve added to this collection three fleeces, easy for layering or soft enough to be worn on their own. The blue and red plaid half-zips each sport their own sweet pup appliqué, while the red and navy tunic boasts a large 3-D flower just atop the ruffled hem. Warm and fuzzy, this third fleece also has a unique dimpled pattern, giving this fabric a luxe quality as rich as it is soft.

Candy cane craving? Our red and white stripe knit group is sweet enough to eat. With 3-D flowers on both the dress and the tunic and leggings set, these peppermint-inspired girls’ pieces can be worn year-round, but we’d recommend the boys’ smiling snowman top for cuddling up after an afternoon sledding in the snow.

Our other coordinated knit sets can be worn well after the holiday season. We have a grey and white stripe longall with a red-nosed pup that can be worn year-round, and for girls we’ve added dashes of pink to our half-zip tunic set with flowers and trim.

In royal blue and navy, a bear goes mountain climbing up this boys’ half-zip, while the ladybug on our ruffled tunic and leggings set climbs to her own impressive height.

For casual stripes with a bit more texture, we have two pairs of siblings’ sets in a durable piqué knit. The light blue and white dress and longall add some soft pastel to this otherwise bold-colored holiday collection, while the navy and white dress and longall keep that classic look with accents of red holly and nordic-style knitting patterns.

Add some whimsy to your boys’ wardrobe with our sweaters, featuring juggling penguins, our bear with earmuffs, and a handstanding snowman. Made to coordinate with our sibling stripe sets above, their playfulness and charm really stand on their own.

Finally, we have two matching velour dresses for girl and baby girl. With three red bows at both the yoke and drop waist skirt, it’s the fabric’s subtle red and green bud pattern that makes these simple silhouettes truly unique. Pair with red leggings or tights to dress up or down for the occasion, then snuggle up with our red baby longall with Christmas cookie appliqués. What’s sweeter than that?

Our second Holiday delivery arrives on Wednesday. Formed from five smaller capsules, this second of three deliveries begins our transition to more ready-to-play styles.

Girl in blue tree dress in front of decorated tree

Let’s kick things off with our Winter Wonderland fleeces. These icy light blue plush half-zips are available in either a pullover or dress, with a multi-color tree pattern that can be worn all winter long. Both pair perfectly with our brand new navy leggings with green tree inset for two of the cutest everyday outfits we’ve made this season.

Who’s All Aboard with our five-piece train set? The boys really star in this coordinated family set, with bold trains adorning each of our signature longall and sweater silhouettes. Pair the sweater with our train embroidered navy corduroy pants for the perfect little conductor outfit. But don’t worry, we didn’t forget the girls. We’ve rounded out this grouping with our vintage inspired red corduroy jumper. The white stitching detail, drop waist silhouette, shirred skirt, and above knee length truly make this one of the most detailed pieces of the entire collection.

Next we’re offering two looks that can be dressed up or down, whatever your occasion calls for. First, our knee-length red dress can be worn with tights, leggings, or as is. This deceptively simple silhouette shows off the subtle diamond pattern woven into the red jacquard.

girl in white rocking chair wearing a red dress with flowers on the pocketsyoung boy in a red and blue color block polo sitting on stairs

To compliment, we have a versatile red, white, and navy color blocked polo that really can be worn most any time of the year.

Any dinosaur fans this holiday season?

Our coordinated green and navy knits are a must. Also available in onesie and dress, the knit shirt with the dinosaur sleeve really steals the show. The T-Rex arms and spikes that hang off your little one’s arm are sure to inspire any budding paleontologist!

Finally (and especially for all those still working on their holiday photos), we have a couple more formal styles. First, we have two lightweight plaid dresses, both with matching embroidered collars. For baby girl, we’ve styled this seasonal plaid with a yoke silhouette and a full, darling skirt. The older girls’ dress features the same ribbon tie detail, but with a drop waist silhouette and flared skirt.

For those looking for a bolder solid, you can’t go wrong with the navy knit dress with red bows, a color too often overlooked over the holidays but which adds that classic elegance we always strive for in our collections.

Whether you’re dressing them up for dinner at Grandma’s or just snuggling up to watch your favorite classic movie this season, mark the occasion in one of our timeless holiday styles. And for more looks perfect for romping about the house, our chilly morning casual styles are just around the corner.

Building on gbventurespub’s signature appliqué process, our design team used glossy red “berry” buttons on green appliqué leaves to create an elegant, mixed-media effect.

The remainder of this delivery (releasing Wednesday, September 15th!) can be broken into four core groups: houndstooths, tartans, velvets, and knits; all of which haven been designed to be worn on any sort of special occasion.

Our red houndstooth dress and coordinated shortall are sure to be favorites. This elegant check fabric stands out on the dress’ panelled bodice, perfectly balanced with the setting of red petaled flowers stitched into the waist. Gold buttons wink from the shortall’s shoulder straps and solid red tabs, mimicking the classic motif of the nutcracker’s jacket.

This year’s tartan grouping features the same care for pattern contrast. The plaid on the dress’ front pockets lies at an angle against the expertly aligned navy and green check, trimmed with velvet and buttons that coordinate with our signature Eton suit. One of our favorite fabrics—this classic navy and green plaid invokes a real feeling of pride that we cannot wait to bring to your growing child.

Our signature velvets also return; this year in three green styles: two dresses and a boys longall. This grouping is perfect for family holiday photos because it can be styled so well with our other groupings (especially our favorite houndstooth!).

And finally those looking for premium knits will find two eye-catching Christmas tree sweaters (and one sweater dress!). For a stand alone piece, our Truck Sweater will brighten up any little boy’s smile, while those wanting to outfit the family can look to our Intarsia Fir Trees for sibling coordinates.

In our first Fall Release, we reminded you that love is in the little things—in those thousands of small moments that, when fully lived, create a childhood. Children may make memories out of the larger moments, aided by presents, keepsakes, home movies, and photos. It’s the day-to-day moments, however, that, if cherished, leave a lasting impact.

Embroidered dinosaurs add colorful touches of fun to these navy joggers.

It’s in the little details, too, that we celebrate childhood. Children are always learning, their imaginations always evolving. The details we add to our clothing are meant to spark joy and inspire play. We ensure the fit and texture of our garments keeps them feeling safe, secure, and comforted. We want them to spend their day smiling in clothes they can’t wait to wear.

We all love the big moments—birthdays, graduations, their first family holiday—but while those moments may mark the milestones, they aren’t the only memories to cherish. Living life with appreciation for little moments is vital to happiness, especially for parents.

In our first Fall Release blog, we talked about how small moments between parents and children have lasting, positive effects on children’s health and happiness, but kids aren’t the only ones whose quality of life improves when we focus on the little things. Parents, too, benefit from small moments of connection with their child. Emotional savoring, or the active process of enjoyment, has been linked by psychologists to higher positive emotion in parents and greater life satisfaction overall.

Our baby longall uses white stitching to mimic train tracks on this color block classic.

So what are the little moments? Savoring doesn’t always have to happen in the present. It can look like reflecting back on the day while lying in bed, or visualizing something you’re looking forward to with your child. Every evening when I was little, I would sit on my mother’s lap in her rocking chair and ask her to “talk about tomorrow.” In a calm, gentle voice, she would tell me everything we had planned for the next day, whether it was school, swim lessons, a party, or simply errands. Even if plans the next day changed, I always went to bed with a sense of security, looking forward to what the next day would bring. As a child, I savored the sense of safety that little ritual provided, and to this day I remember fondly how lovely those little moments felt.

Girl's yellow scalloped tunic with colored circle appliqués

This scalloped-hem tunic pops with brightly colored appliqués.

For good reason, little moments of connection are hard to make time for, so it’s all the more important to cherish them when they happen: a baby’s quizzical look as she tries to take in everything new in the world around her, punctuated now and then by an impromptu, toothless smile; the tiny “please” and “thank you” earned when offering a child his favorite cookie; their delicate little snores.

Blue front-tie dress with embroidered polka dots

We adorned our front-tie dress, a versatile classic, with delicate embroidered polka dots.

Designing our second Fall Release, we focused on the little details children love. Appliqué polka-dots, train sets, ladybugs, and cars are scattered across a palette of bold primary colors and playful pinks, purples, and blues. Color-block panels in cotton and corduroy complement patterns of spots, squiggles, and stripes. With tunic sets, hoodies, rompers, and more, you’ll find something special for every child.

Look for our second Fall Release this Wednesday, July 14th, and sign up for our emails to get an exclusive preview before the launch.

It’s a story we all know. Children grow up fast, and as a parent it’s easy to lose yourself in the hectic pace of shuffling kids to and from school, sports practice, playdates, and back again. While you want to give your child a full life, it’s also important every now and then to just pause, breathe, and appreciate the love in the little things.

Taking time for the little things isn’t just for snapping that quick shot for Insta to cherish later. Researchers have suggested that little moments between parents and children help strengthen the bond of love and contribute to children’s positive development. Eye contact, physical connection, and even emotional attunement all help strengthen a child’s sense of safety, trust, and love. Moments of love with a parent can help strengthen a child’s cognitive and social development.

This soft aqua tunic sports our chalk art flower motif, a sweet hint of playfulness

You know those little moments—the first time your child wraps their whole tiny hand around your finger, or the first moment they open their eyes. Those moments only increase as they grow. Whether it’s cutting their hot dog up in bite-size pieces or making sure their shoes are double-tied, we know you show love through the little things. That proud smile at the school recital or the extra treat you slip into their lunchbox will stay with them, whether or not they ever realize it.

Our signature petalled appliqués give this classic striped dress just the perfect pop of red.

When it comes to your child’s wardrobe, we worry about the little things so you can focus on those moments instead. We make clothes first and foremost for children, and we know what will fit them right, from babies to toddlers to tweens. Every garment is designed to drape over their little round bellies, to stay snug without pinching, and to allow for easy changing, because you don’t have time to fight both the sweater and the two-year-old.

The pink ribbon detail on the ruffle adds a pop of pink and complements the petalled appliqués.

It isn’t just about comfort. True, we make sure that every zipper is finished with fabric so it won’t scratch the skin, and that buttons are just the right size for little fingers to dress themselves, but as we like to say, #stylestartssmall. We put thought into the most basic aesthetic elements. You’ll see color patterns repeated to make for easy matching, helping children practice the independence of dressing themselves while making sure they look put-together. We follow our founder’s insistence that the child should be seen before the clothes. Our details are designed to be subtle, adding just the right splash of color or that charming little tie, bow, or ruffle.

We designed this heart flower pattern to mimic colorful chalk art and added bows to match.

In our first Fall Release you’ll see familiar style elements that make gbventurespub garments so classic—bright colors, clean lines, and details that pop. We brought back our fall stripes in our favorite shades of navy, green, pink, and blue. Longalls and rompers for baby boys and girls feature new appliqués and some favorites from the past. Dresses, jumpers, tunics, and more come in a variety of silhouettes, so each child can find their perfect fit. As always, each is made with the best quality fabric, impeccable craftsmanship, and, of course, care for the details.

Look for our coming Fall Release this Wednesday, June 16th, and even more surprises on the way. In the meantime, enjoy the little things.

They say that memories can last a lifetime, but what about memories meant to outlive us? How do we share our memories with our loved ones after we're gone? Making a grandparents memory book is an activity you can do with your grandchild which will not only share your memories with them, but will make new ones for them to cherish.

What is a Memory Book?

Basically, a memory book is a collection of memories, gathered and written down to be shared. A memory book can include photographs, news clippings, or other mementos to be preserved and passed on. They can be written as events take place throughout the course of a lifetime, or all at once as a series of recollections. They can have a theme, like family vacations or life milestones, or they can have a more general, journal-like scope. Essentially, a memory book is whatever you want it to be.

Many memory books you can purchase come pre-formatted; all you have to do is write down your own answers to questions in the space they've given you. These you can find online or at bookstores. There are even online digital services that compile your memories into a book you can order and distribute to loved ones (for a fee, of course).

All these are lovely gifts to give a grandchild, each filled with your unique stories and photos, but they lack something that making your own grandparents memory book does not—making a memory you and your grandchild can share.

Making a memory book with your grandchild is an activity you both can enjoy. It means spending time together, not just passing memories back and forth, but building on them. The very act of making a memory book together is precious bonding time with your grandchild.

This article will give you some starting tips and guidelines for making a grandparents memory book with your grandchild. Ultimately, what you choose to create is your own, so get creative! Whatever theme, format, or even design you end up choosing will be unique to you, and the memories you make while creating it will make the book that much more special.

How Do I Make a Memory Book?

One of the best things about making your own is that your book will be truly one-of-a-kind. Purchasable books come pre-formatted with various themes, and some even let you add your own pictures, but they are limited compared to what you and your grandchild may want from your own. As you follow this guide, remember that these are just suggestions. There are countless ways to create a keepsake, so long as it is special to you.

Getting Started

Before you add glue to the back of a single photograph, there are some things you should prepare before starting your grandparents memory book. Going through these steps will help you come up with a clearer idea of what kind of book you want to make, how to do it, and whose help you'll need. Let's get started!

Choose a Theme

Choosing a theme for your book will make it easier to focus on what stories and photos you want to include. You may prefer certain topics like holidays, family recipes, places you've lived, etc. You may want your book to be your own life story, highlighting milestones or dividing sections into formative eras. You may want it to be about more of the family, with pages dedicated to genealogy and stories passed down through generations. You may even choose for it to be about your grandchild, the memories you have of them, and advice you want them to have forever.

A theme is just a way of organizing your memory book into something manageable. It can be whatever you like, depending on your personal and family values and what you want to share with your grandchild. Some other theme ideas are:

Family Traditions

What are family traditions that were passed down through you that continue to this day? What are some you remember from your own childhood that haven't survived? What are new ones that you've started, or seen start in your lifetime? Gather photographs, cards, letters, games, recipes, and anything else you can think of around family holidays. Invite your grandchild to draw their own memories, pick their favorite traditions, or ask you questions about what traditions have meant to the family, then and now.

Book of Firsts

Who was your first friend? Your first pet? What was your first job? Your first vacation? What are your first memories of your grandchild? What are their first memories of you? Invite your grandchild to ask questions about what they are interested, and don't forget to share the important moments that you wouldn't want the book to go without.

Words of Wisdom

What is the best advice you've ever received, and how did it shape who you are? What was a difficult moment in your life, and how did you get through it? Who were your role models, and why? Include quotes, stories, songs, or other moments of inspiration that helped shape your life experience. Let your grandchild include things that make them happy, or things they struggle with, or ways in which you've shown them support. These are life lessons that will stay with your grandchild, long after you've gone.

Choose Your Format

Now that you've decided on your theme, it's time to choose what your book will eventually look like. There are pros and cons to the different formats available, but they all fall into two categories: physical or digital.

Physical Memory Books

Physical memory books are more traditional than digital formats. You can make yours a journal, scrapbook, photo album, or anything else you can creatively come up with. Physical memory books allow you to work side-by-side with your grandchild, placing photographs, hand-writing captions, and adding creative embellishments like drawings, stickers, or dried flowers from the garden. They allow you to paste keepsakes right to the page, but be careful when choosing your supplies. Look for "Acid-free," "pH neutral," or "Archival Safe" on the labels of paper, adhesives, and anything else you're using with your priceless photographs. When in doubt, ask your local craft store.

Digital Memory Books

Digital memory books come in almost as many forms as physical ones. Some desktop design programs have templates for scrapbooking or making digital photo albums. Other web-based or browser-based programs have similar features. Some websites offer scrapbooking services where you can pick a template, upload your own images and text, and download it to view and share digitally or even order a published copy. These services vary in cost and take some of the fun out of making your own book by hand, but they also can be easily shared with loved ones, and you won't ever have to worry about spills or sticky fingers!

Building your Memory Book

Ask & Answer Questions

Once you have decided your theme and format, it's time to gather material. We provided some examples of questions and topics around the themes in the previous section, but this is a great time to sit down with your grandchild and find out what questions they have for you. As you ask and answer these questions, think of what anecdotes you want to include with them, what photographs or other keepsakes might be relevant, or other ways in which you can bring these memories to life. Let your theme be your guide, and have fun with it! You never know what forgotten stories might come up.

Example Questions
  • What was your favorite food growing up? Do you have fond memories related to it?
  • What technological advancement did you live through? How did it change daily life?
  • What is it like being a grandparent?
  • What are your memories of your own grandparents?
  • What were your grandchild's parents like growing up?
  • If you could go back anywhere, where would you go?
  • What's the craziest thing you've ever done? Silliest? Bravest? Most embarrassing?
  • What is your favorite book/movie/song?
  • What makes a good person?

Gather Photos

This is a great opportunity to dig into old photo albums, letters, time capsules, and more. Photographs and keepsakes like greeting cards, artwork, handwritten notes, recipes, and brochures from favorite travel spots add a lot of character. These mementos might bring back their own memories, themselves. Include a poem or the lyrics to a special song, press a favorite flower between the pages, or describe a memorable scent and why it is special to you. Draw something from your childhood that never made it into photographs. It doesn't matter what the art looks like; what matters is the memory!

Ask the Family

You can ask for your family's help at really any stage of this process, but getting their input after you and your grandchild have the theme and general ideas decided will help your family focus on what they can contribute. Requesting photos from previous holidays is a simpler ask than suggesting your busy cousins rummage through all their own photo albums for who knows what's in there.

It's up to you how much you want your family's help. It isn't just photographs that they can provide, but their own questions and memories. Ask them what they would want to know about their grandparents that they never got to ask, or ask them what they would want to pass on to their own grandchildren, one day. Maybe they have their own version of a memory you might want to include.

For memory books with a family-focused theme, dedicate a page to each family member, including photos of and stories about that person. For those still with you, ask them for words of advice or good wishes to pass on to your grandchild. For those who are not, ask other family members for memories of the loved one who's departed. These can be delivered as simply as over the phone or email, or family members can send hand-written cards in the mail to be pasted into your book, or even scanned in if you're making yours digital.

Add Finishing Touches

Whatever your theme or format, you may want to include some finishing touches to your keepsake. These are things that might not have fit into the rest of the book but still help paint the picture of a life well-lived. Some ideas for finishing touches are:

  • Meaningful or memorable quotes
  • A timeline of events, like birthdays, marriages, and other important dates
  • Traditions that are culturally or religiously significant
  • Dreams and goals for the future
  • Photographs of making the grandparents memory book itself

Assemble and Share

Once you have every question, quote, story, photo, and keepsake gathered, it's time to put it all together. How you approach this will depend on whether you've chosen a physical or digital format.

For digital books, scan and upload your photos, mementos, and other items along with any items you have stored or were sent digitally. Depending on what program you've chosen, you will have varying customizable features in creating the final look of your book and how to share it with others. Whether the service offers a digital download or a book you can order copies of, you'll have a final product all your own.

For physical books, whether you've been adding pages as you went or decided to do them all at once, now's your chance to add the last personal touches. Ask your grandchild to draw pictures to go along with the photos, or to add stickers to pages of text. Be careful with certain markers and pens, though, as some can bleed and damage paper and photographs. Remember to ask your local craft store when in doubt.

A few last tips: add dates, places, and names to photographs. Photographs are always more meaningful with their memories attached. Hard covers might look more professional, but books that allow you to add pages over time mean this project can grow with you and your grandchild. Make photocopies or a digital backup, just in case.

Finally, don't forget to share your creation with us! Let us know in the comments how it went. What you would have done differently? What did you learn about yourself, or your grandchild, or your relationship? What was your favorite moment working together?

We'd love to see what you created. Share your photos of your grandparents memory book with us on Instagram with the tag #generationsofstyle.

https://www.gbventurespub.com/blogs/news/creating-a-kids-workspace 2021-01-21T17:53:55-06:00 2021-02-06T16:49:12-06:00 Creating a Kids Workspace Elizabeth Krejci Create a workspace for your student

With so many families learning and working from home these days, it can be difficult to make enough space for everyone. Parents and kids alike suffer from the distractions of a busy household. With everyone trying to eat, play, work, rest, and learn all at the same time and in the same house, it's no surprise that productivity can suffer.

A kids workspace might not replace the structure and familiarity of a classroom, but it can give kids a dedicated space to focus on their studies. We've created a guide for building a kids workspace that will help them stay focused, energized, and on task while distance learning from home.

Choose a Location

You don't need a home office for every member of your family to set your child up for success. Whether it's a desk in their bedroom or a seat at the dining room table, what matters is they have a dedicated spot for schoolwork. Having a spot for school helps children differentiate between school time and non-school time, helps them stick to a routine, and helps them focus.

Your child's workspace could be in their bedroom, a corner of the living room, or even a chair at your own desk. Where you choose will depend on your child's age and learning style, and your family's available space and needs.

Central Location

A central location is best for younger learners who might need more parental supervision when it comes to staying on task. A seat at the dining room table may be just the spot where you can keep an eye on them. Some older children learn better with others around. Being in a central location might help them focus better than the creepy quiet of an empty room. If your child works well at the kitchen counter amid the hustle-and-bustle, then by all means, let them.

Wherever they set up, this dedicated spot should remain consistent. Having a stable routine can replicate some of the familiarity and structure of a classroom and keep kids focused. To quickly and easily convert your kitchen table, counter, etc. into a school desk, you'll want to invest in mobile organizers. A mobile supplies cart or even a backpack to store school supplies will make setting up for school stress-free. A backpack has the added benefit of helping your child get more in the 'school zone,' giving them the feeling of getting ready for school when the supplies are laid out. At the end of the day, simply put the supplies away and transition out of the school day.

Out of the Way Location

Older kids who focus better without supervision might benefit from some sectioned-off space in a living room or other communal area. The end of a quiet hallway, a finished basement, or breakfast nook could be the ideal spot for setting up a semi-permanent or permanent kids workspace.

This space should be free from as many distractions as possible. Though white noise or low music might actually help kids focus, the TV should remain off. Consider cubby storage, bookshelves, curtains, or even a screen to give them some privacy from the family while they're working—or give your home some while they're in virtual class.

Depending on your available space, get creative! Linen closets can be converted into desk nooks, shallow counters can turn landings or hallways into study areas, even sectioning off part of your own desk for your kids workspace could give them just the space they need.

Bedroom

Though this may seem the most obvious place to set up a kids workspace, it's last for a reason. A bedroom is filled with distractions. Not only might their toys tempt them away from schoolwork, but it is difficult to keep a bedroom work station a 'dedicated spot.' Things that aren't school supplies tend to migrate to bedroom surfaces, making it more difficult to keep schoolwork organized. It might also be challenging for your child to transition between school time and non-school time, if their bedroom doubles as the space for both.

If you do choose to set up in the bedroom—maybe it's where your child feels the most comfortable, maybe it's the quietest place in the house—make sure that the dedicated spot remains the dedicated spot. This is a great teaching opportunity for helping your child stay organized. Keep school supplies in acrylic organizers to cut down on clutter and make pencils, crayons, and erasers easy to find. Make sure kids understand that the desk is for schoolwork, not play, and help them put everything away after lessons to signify the end of the school day.

Set It Up

What you choose to add to your workspace will depend on its location, your home's set-up, and your child's needs. Not every child will need their own desk, but you should still give some thought to furniture, lighting, and storage when designing their study area.

Before you go ahead and start painting that old desk in the attic, get your kid involved. This study space will be for them, after all, and will have to suit their comfort level as much as yours. Engaging with your child to build the space together will get them excited and make spending time there feel less like a chore or a time-out. Get their input on what's comfortable for them, and help them organize and decorate so it feels like their very own.

a flat desk space with plenty of room

A Flat Table

Whether they're set up at a kitchen counter or have their own desk built into a loft bed—a smooth, flat surface is key, especially for older kids. Kindergarteners who may only be spending an hour or two at virtual homeroom might not need more than a play table or kids lap tray. Older kids, however, spend the better part of the day in their chairs and will need enough table space for their work, supplies, and whatever devices their schoolwork requires.

The height of the desk is also important. If a desk is too large or small, it can lead to bad posture, which contributes to fidgeting, fatigue, and other, long-term issues. When seated at a desk, a child's feet should touch the ground, with their knees bent at 90°. Their wrists should rest comfortably on the desk, with back straight and elbows also at a 90° angle. If they are looking at a screen or tablet, it should be mounted straight ahead, so they are not looking up or down. A tablet stand, laptop stand, or smartphone stand to keep their devices at eye-level will reduce neck and back strain. If you're able, consider investing in an adjustable desk that will fit your child as they grow.

The Right Chair

Unless your child prefers standing at their desk, the right chair is the second piece of the puzzle when it comes to comfort. A good chair, like a good desk, encourages good posture and helps kids stay focused for longer. An adjustable chair, like an adjustable desk, is ideal for a growing child, but what matters is that the chair fits them and is comfortable.

If their chair is too high, add a footstool, stacked books, or crate so their feet aren't dangling. If the chair is too low, add cushions, phone books (are those still a thing?), or a booster seat. A rolled-up towel or a pillow for their lower back is a helpful feature for keeping good posture, as well.

Good Lighting

Natural lighting is best, but as long as your kids workspace is well-lit, it'll help them focus. A desk light will do, but here's a chance to add some fun and make their study space more engaging. Stylish hanging lamps in different shapes and colors add a lot of character. Lighting from multiple sources can also help brighten up the space, boost their mood, and keep their energy up.

Decorate & Organize

a well decorated desk space

Now comes the fun part. Organizing and decorating your kids workspace is something you can do together. You'll have the peace of mind of knowing everything has its proper place, and they'll have some ownership over their own workstation. The more involved they are in helping create their own space, the more engaged they will be in using it.

Desk Storage

Whether the kids workspace is a mobile station that can fit at any table, desk, or counter, or a permanent space with its own furniture and lighting, storage matters. Keeping an organized work station, wherever it is, is key to productivity. Storage can be as basic as a homework caddy or as unique as repurposed cookie jars. It all depends on you and your child's space, needs, and creativity.

We mentioned a backpack for keeping school supplies in if your child works at a busy, central location in the house. Mobile carts also help keep things accessible and tidy—roll it out for crafts time and roll it right back when the table's cleared. Having all your child's supplies in one spot will reduce the time and stress it takes to set up for the school day and will help them focus on their work rather than searching for a rogue pencil sharpener.

For more semi-permanent and permanent station, keep clutter to a minimum. To minimize distractions, put in easy reach only what they'll need for their day-to-day work. For supplies they might not need as often, find an accessible but out-of-the way space in a cubby, on a shelf, or even in a shoebox—somewhere they can get to on their own, but won't get mixed up with the more basic supplies. You want to keep them seated and on task, not wandering around the house looking for supplies...and finding toys and games instead.

Wall Storage

When it comes to walls, the sky is the limit! (Ok, so the ceiling is). Using walls for extra storage is a great space-saver. Shelves, wall organizers, hanging folders, or a peg board are all handy additions to maximizing storage space.

Mounted hanging folders help keep paperwork from migrating throughout the house. Consider a parents in/out tray, so you can keep track of assignments that still need to be completed. If siblings share your kids workspace, labelling these folders will help keep their assignments separate.

Wall organizers can fit papers and notebooks, but also calculators, pencil sharpeners, and even a trusty dictionary. A peg board can be fitted with colorful shelves, containers, hooks, clips, and more. Allow your child to customize a peg board or cork board with washi tape to make the space a little more their own.

You don't have to fill the wall with shelves to make the best use of it. Chalk boards, white boards, or a wall calendar provide visual stimulation while helping keep kids on task. Printed wall paper, wall decals, or other art can make the space more inviting. The goal is to make a kids workspace that is functional and appealing so they stay comfortable and focused throughout the school day.

Keep a schedule on their chalk board, white board, or wall-mounted calendar of assignments, zoom dates with friends, and even your own meeting times so they know when you can and cannot be interrupted. Add colored chalk or markers, fun magnets, and other little personal touches. When so much of their work is virtual, having a physical reminder of tasks and class times can help keep kids on track.

Survival Tips

To optimize your kids workspace, consider these additional tips:

Make a Rotation Schedule

If your space is limited, consider one desk station that siblings can share. Set up a rotational schedule so each child has enough time at the desk for their classwork. Designate a comfy chair for a reading hour or stock up extra art supplies at the kitchen counter for the other 'learning stations' in rotation.

Respect the Space

The best way to teach your child to respect their workspace is to respect it yourself. You wouldn't want anyone barging into your office when you're trying to get work done, so have the same courtesy for your child's designated work time. Assign chores for before or after the school day, and reward kids for staying on task during their scheduled lessons.

Invest in a Label Maker

A label maker is a life saver if you have multiple kids. Label everything—pencil cases, calculators, notebooks, even the backs of their favorite chairs—anything to get them to stop fighting over supplies and get back to their school work.

Invest in Headphones

Headphones are a survival item for both of you. Between virtual classes and Zoom meetings, headphones help keep the classroom and office separate. They minimize household distractions and help keep them—and you—focused on work.

Take Breaks

Breaks are important for anyone working at a desk for a substantial period of the day, but especially for kids. Kids need to move throughout the day to keep their energy up and their mind cleared. Take stretch breaks as a family or schedule their recess right before a more difficult learning task, so they come to it refreshed.

A kids workspace will not solve all the challenges of remote learning, but hopefully it can bring a little more order to your home. Giving a child their own workspace means freeing up space for the rest of the family for meals, activities, or just down time. You might feel empowered to try that 1000-piece puzzle now that the dining room table is free, or maybe you just have a bit more breathing room.

A workspace of their very own means giving a child pride and a sense of ownership while teaching them valuable lessons about time management, organization, and personal responsibility. It helps them transition into and out of the school day, signaling to them when it's time to focus on work and when they can close their books, pack up their supplies, and spend time with the family.
